When an insurer decides a car isn't worth repairing, it's classed as a write-off. What you can do with the car afterwards depends on how it was classified, which is why the first thing we'll ask is the write-off type.
Below is a plain-English summary of how Queensland classifies write-offs, taken from the Queensland Government's own pages.
Sound familiar?
The insurer paid out and you kept the car
Some owners keep a written-off car after settlement. Tell us the classification and what's damaged.
You've been told it's a write-off but not what type
Ask your insurer whether it is a statutory or repairable write-off. It changes what can be done with the car.
The car is beyond repair
A vehicle with damage too severe to repair may be suitable only for parts or scrap.
You want it gone
Whatever the classification, you can send the details and find out whether we can help.
What to tell us about a written-off car
- Whether it's a statutory or repairable write-off, if you know
- Which insurer assessed it and roughly when
- What caused the write-off: collision, flood, fire or something else
- How badly damaged it is, with photos
- Whether it can be driven or needs to be towed
You don't need every detail. Tell us what you know.
Written-off vehicles in Queensland: what the government says
- There are two classifications of written-off vehicle: statutory and repairable.
- A statutory write-off has been assessed as a total loss with damage too severe to be repaired and returned to the road. It can't be re-registered in Queensland or any other Australian jurisdiction, even if it is repaired, and some of its parts can't be used to repair or rebuild another vehicle.
- A repairable write-off is a total loss that doesn't meet the criteria for a statutory write-off. It may be re-registered after it passes a safety certificate inspection and a Written-off Vehicle Inspection.
- Australian states and territories share a written-off vehicle register, which can be searched through the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR).
- Owners and operators of notifiable vehicles must also notify the department if their vehicle is a total economic loss and no one else has already done so.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to repair my car before getting a quote?
No. Tell us what's wrong with it and we'll assess it as it is. There's no need to spend money on repairs first.
What information do you need for a quote?
The make, model, year, where the car is, and what condition it's in. Photos help us give you a more accurate figure but are optional.
Is there any obligation once I ask for a quote?
Asking for a quote doesn't commit you to selling. You decide whether the offer suits you.
Can you buy a written-off vehicle?
It depends on the write-off classification and Queensland requirements. Give us the details and we'll confirm whether we can purchase it.
What's the difference between statutory and repairable?
A statutory write-off can never be re-registered in Australia. A repairable write-off may be re-registered after a safety certificate inspection and a Written-off Vehicle Inspection. See the Queensland Government summary above.
How do I find out the classification?
Your insurer should be able to tell you. The classification is also recorded on the national written-off vehicle register, which can be checked through the PPSR.
